Notebooks are not just for work
Computers are shrinking in size all the time. Gone are the days when you needed a room that could accommodate several cabinets the size of a wardrobe or three. Nowadays due to advances in technology, a computer can literally fit into the palm of your hand. You've no doubt seen adverts for the latest mobile phones and maybe even visited the local showroom to try one or two out. They can literally do everything that a computer can do, albeit on a much smaller scale. You can surf the net, expanding and contracting pages as you go, by the use of two fingers, in order to view comfortably what is undoubtedly very small print. If you decide to go away this year, you could certainly tuck one of these in your pocket and you'd never know it was there - customs would however, so be prepared! If your computing needs on holiday are a bit more than the occasional internet surf and email check, then notebooks are certainly worth considering.
For those of you scratching their heads, I don't mean a few sheets of paper stapled together that you write on!. What I'm referring to here is otherwise known as a laptop. These are portable computers which you can carry around from place to place, unlike the good old desktop which is firmly rooted in place. Consequently, if an Italian villa appeals to you as your holiday destination this year, it is not a problem should you wish to take your computer with you. It is small enough to be packed in a suitcase and as you will be flying to your holiday destination, you may choose to have it accompany you on the plane as hand luggage. They are fairly robust in their design but do have some moving parts and as a consequence you might not completely trust the baggage-handlers to treat it with the care and respect that you would do so yourself. Netbooks also have a role to play and are an alternative to notebooks.
These are even smaller in design and manufacture and as you might expect due to the size restriction, they lack some basic facilities. You wont find one that has a built-in DVD/CD drive for example, so if your passion is to watch movies and listen to music from the selection of disks you've decided to pack in your suitcase, you're out of luck. However, should you own an external player you could of course bring that along as well and plug it in when required. You may be a keen photographer and wish to capture for posterity both still and moving images of your once-in-a-lifetime holiday. These can naturally be stored away and printed off at home when you arrive back at the end of your well-deserved break. You could have packed the printer as well, but if you decide on that course of action, you might just has well have taken your complete desktop system with you in the first place!
