Ideas on Applying Colours at Home
Most of the time, houses are more comfortable if you are the one who do the paint jobs and the interior design decisions. Most people, probably like you, would want to include their personal touch into their residence but maybe they are intimidated by all the styles, textures and colour combinations.
Here are some ideas on applying colours at home:
Start with an object or a theme
Some people have attachments to certain places like Italy, Paris or Thailand, and base their house furniture, as well as wallpapers or decorations, on those. They are also usually attached to a certain colour or certain shades.
How to do it:
- Choose a theme that you would like to do the most base on the objects found in that room.
- Research on at most four shades that somehow signify the colour scheme you have in mind. For Chinese-inspired design, that would be pure ruby red, gold, ochre and dark brown; but if you are looking for a lighter combination you can try flesh (light peach), orange, jade green and light brown.

A few colour theories in a 12-part colour wheel:
Analogous - They are three colours directly beside each other. For example: red, red-orange and orange.
Complementary - They are two colours directly across each other. This is particularly useful when you want to highlight a certain object in the house like a big lava lamp. You can paint your walls a shade of blue green, which is complementary to red-orange.
Split complementary – This is an advanced and very tricky four-colour technique that utilises both theories (analogous and complementary) in one. For example: for the red and green complementary, the split equivalent would be yellow-green, blue-green, red-violet and red-orange.
